Alone on Themyscira

June 15, 2017

I went to the Wonder Woman movie with no preconceived notions, and without any great desire to even see it…and that was pretty much how I felt when I left the theater. “Meh” sums it up perfectly for me, two hours lost, that sort of thing.

As a comics fan, I’d read the story of Diana Prince and her Island of Amazon women when I was younger, and I loved the Lynda Carter series in the late 1970’s. But I can’t say this newest incarnation added anything to the iconic character other than steeping it in modern moviemaking’s love of weak, simplistic plots, peppered with a barrage of special effects.

I didn’t like the movie. Seems I’m the only one.

While watching it, my mind kept wandering—not a good sign, am I right?!--so I decided to capture my fleeting thoughts as a way to sum up my Wonder Woman experience.

  • Robin Wright is a complete badass. She was amazing as a fearless Amazon warrior, with the same chilling strength she displays as Clair Underwood. Brilliant.

  • Too much “jump-posing,” freezing WW in mid-air in dynamic, repetitive, oh-so- endlessly-repetitive poses of strength. That’s all she did, seriously. The first hundred times it didn’t bother me. Then it did.

  • Chris Pine’s upper lip needs to switch places with his bottom lip. And vice-versa.

  • I LOVE David Thewlis. Love, love, love.

  • A woman in the washroom had on the same Sketchers as I did. She and I were the only ones in there. Coincidence? Mind blown, I left the theater.

My husband has commented that my analysis of this epic movie is extremely shallow, to which I can reply, “You’re not the boss of me,” Wonder Woman style.
